We all know that weddings are expensive events even for those of us who aren’t among the wealthiest and most powerful in the world. But imagine what you could do if your budget was almost limitless? What kind of wedding would you have if there were no limitations in terms of money, room, destination, or guest number? Well, you can find a few ideas in this list of extravagant weddings:
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to Princess Salama
When a sheikh and a princess marry, it’s obviously going to be a big deal. This Abu Dhabi ruler’s parents decided no ordinary venue would do for the event so they had one built: it was a stadium that held 20,000 guests! On top of that, the wedding festivities went on for an entire week. During that time, he sent gifts to his new bride on camels decorated in jewels. The estimated cost of this whole celebration would be $100 million in today’s dollars.
Vanisha Mittal to Amit Bhatia
Mittal is the daughter of the man who owns the world’s biggest steel company so there was no question her wedding would be something amazing. First, the invitations arrived in silver box and contained 20 pages of romantic poetry. Second, the entire guest list was flown to the Palace of Versailles in France for part of the festivities that included a show with real cancan dancers, a Bollywood style performance of how the couple met directed by an actual filmmaker, and fireworks from the Eiffel Tower. The wedding lasted six days and cost around $60 million in 2005.
Donald Trump to Melania Knauss
Extravagance is always just about how much the wedding cost. Sometimes it’s those little extras that really send it over the top. For example, when Trump got married yet again in 2005 his bride walked down the aisle in a custom made dress that used 50 pounds of material to make. The dress’s price tag was in the six figures but she changed into a different dress after the first dance at the reception. Speaking of the reception, the couple didn’t neglect their guests with those little extras either: their 500 guests were treated to bottles of champagne costing $650 per bottle and a cake that weighed 200 pounds.
Vikram Chatwal to Priya Sachdev
Chatwal was the son of a hotel mogul and Sachdev was a model in India so when the two decided to get married it was destined to be a huge event. The wedding took place in three different cities and guests were transported by private jets and chartered planes to each of the destinations. During one of the many parties, a painted elephant was allowed to roam around. Tens of thousands of flowers were shipped in from around the world and more than 60,000 meters of fabric were used during the ceremony. The wedding cost around $20 million.
As you can see from these examples, the most extravagant weddings definitely are show stoppers. From the wedding attire to the invitations to the locations, these expensive but memorable events show us just how amazing weddings can be when money is no object.
