How a To Do List Can Increase Your Happiness

Really, a To-Do List?

Normally the first things we think about in the morning are things that should give us a headache. Worrying about what we did yesterday, or what we are going to do today, or what will happen tomorrow. Worry is a waste of time as we are mulling over things that haven’t happened or things we can’t control, yet we continue to focus on negative thoughts instead of positive ones.

The thing we have to remember is that our thoughts are extremely powerful and important to our day. They can literally make or break our day. Ever heard the expression “If you wake up feeling good you will have a good day! And if you wake up feeling bad you will have a bad day!”. These expressions are so true because our thoughts directly affect our feelings.

What if you could make sure that you were going to wake up feeling good and think positive thoughts for the day ahead? What if you could  bring about that good day and always wake up on the right side of the bed?

Your to-do list will force you to be positive and weed out worry because you will have to focus on the things you actually want to get done – and have a straight path to head down (your list)  to get those things done.

You will look forward to the day ahead because you will know what YOU want to get done that will make YOU feel better about life and yourself. The only things that you WANT to do are things that make you happier. Your to do-list should help you reach happiness.

The key to to-do lists is to do them the night before. Sit down and really think about the goals you are trying to reach and the tasks that will help you achieve those goals. Think about what will make you happy and feel accomplished after doing it. Then schedule those to-do items in for tomorrow.

Only put attention onto things you want to accomplish and things that will bring about happiness. Do not let your mind think about things that haven’t happened yet, or things that may not work out. Think of positive outcomes when writing your list. This will allow you to ‘take that chance’ with something you’ve been wanting to do to push your further in life, instead of holding you back with fear and doubt.

You should make your list in the same order you see your day happening. This will give you a good visual of your day, and give you a structured list to follow. It will also make you feel more organized and accomplished as you check each one off the next day.

Your list should be:

  • A list you believe in.
  • A  list that is geared towards your happiness.
  • A list that will help you achieve goals.
  • A list without negative or discouraging thoughts.
  • A list that pushes you towards the day, or even life, that you want.
  • A list that is a little challenging instead of effortless (How else can you move forward?)

There are tons of examples and they are all unique to you.

  • You may want to lose weight, so your list should push you to exercise longer than you did yesterday.
  • You may want to become a writer, so your list should include things that will help you do that.
  • You may want to change your career path, so your list should help you get new skills that you need to do that.

The point is the things that will make you happy will require some effort from you to get. Your to-do list will clearly show you what needs to be done. It will also make you more accountable for accomplishing those tasks then if you just let them drift around in your head.

There will be no more saying “I forgot to do that!” or “I wish I could do that!” because your list is full of things that you wish you could do and hold you accountable to do them.

You will wake up feeling excited for the day ahead and the challenges it will bring. You will grow as a person every day, and move closer to a life you want. It will become second nature to accomplish all the tasks on your list and your inner self will help you figure out how to do so if you are focused enough on doing it.

And after you have finished your to-do list you will feel a sense of accomplishment that is like no other feeling. You have to experience it to know that feeling. You will start to feel great about yourself and what you can do, and where your life is headed, and happiness will be around every corner.
