Regardless of how you feel about the issue, some things are undeniably pointing to the notion that corporate fascism is gaining more momentum in America. One of the largest dangers that are still conveniently being overlooked by big corporations in pursuit of the bottom line is the use of GMO, or genetically modified foods. GMO foods started just like most gene splicing ordeals did (Jurassic Park, Species, Splice with Adam Brody, etc.)… with the best intentions. Corporate farms wanted to find a way to mitigate losses, so they began injecting their produce with a genetically modified organism that would mutate the genetic code of the food, making them more resistant to a type of pesticide, less dependant on water, etc.
However, if there was any single entity that could single handedly prove that the road to hell really is paved with good intentions is true, it would be corporations. A recent study on Canola flowers found that 80% of 400 plants that were sampled had at least one genetically monitored gene, or transgene. Canola flowers were found not only along roads but in ballparks, grocery stores and even cemeteries. After further testing, they found that a few samples were “super strains” made to be chemically resistant to pesticides such as LibertyLink and Roundup Ready (two of the most popular pesticides used today)
What’s so bad about some extra weeds sprouting up everywhere, right? Apparently, genetically altered foods can prove to be deadly. In Japan, GMOs were banned after several deaths and hundreds afflicted with severe metabolic and mental damage when a modified bacteria was used in protein drinks. The modified bacteria ended up creating a new amino acid that is not found in nature, which led to the epidemic, and not too long after, GMOs being banned in Japan.
GMOs are banned in many other countries as well, including Japan, Australia, and the UK. Sadly, it will probably take an epidemic with a considerable number of deaths before we see any ban on GMOs in America, though. Creating a genetically-engineered foods have no place in the ecosystem anyway, so it’s not very surprising that doing so results in such catastrophes. While there’s really no way for us to stop the environmental detriments of GMOs, we can at least avoid foods that have been modified themselves. All you need to do is look for the certified “organic” label.
